More Information...

Short Description:
An online experiment based on 1,000 individuals who ordered a Vegetarian Starter Pack in response to online postings in 2009 found that five minutes spent posting ads on internet sites resulted in five Vegetarian Starter Pack orders, which could save about six animals per year based on the campaign's calculations.

Abstract:

Of the 1,000 individuals who ordered a Vegetarian Starter Pack in response to online postings, 107 completed a follow-up survey 3-6 months after their initial order. These respondents reported the following changes in consumption habits:

  • Beef - 63% decreased or eliminated; 17% completely eliminated; (1% increased)
  • Chicken - 58% decreased or eliminated; 11% completely eliminated; (5% increased)
  • Fish - 38% decreased or eliminated; 7% eliminated entirely; (10% increased)
  • Eggs - 52% decreased or eliminated; 5% eliminated entirely; (3% increased)
  • Dairy - 35% decreased or eliminated; 5% eliminated entirely; (4% increased)
  • Vegetarian Meats - 55% increased; (4% decreased)
  • Dairy Substitutes - 40% increased; (10% decreased)
According to the Take 5 Save 5 campaign, estimates show that 5 minutes of work can yield:

"Five (Veg Starter Pack orders) x .03 (a very low end estimate of the percentage of people who went vegetarian; based on the data above it seems more like 5-7% than 3%) x 40 (approximate number of animals spared per year for each person who goes vegetarian) = about six animals per year"
